We said goodbye to Emmie. Four rescued pigs are still healing. And the work of refuge keeps moving forward.
This week has held both heartbreak and hope at Cotton Branch Refuge Project.
We lost Emmie, a deeply loved member of our family. At the same time, the four pigs we rescued after they were abandoned in a graveyard are continuing to heal, preparing for their neuters, and getting closer to the new home waiting for them.
Refuge means being there for all of it. The emergencies. The recovery. The goodbyes. And the new beginnings.
Remembering Emmie
Emmie was more than a pig in our care. She was family.
She became seriously ill after a viral infection spread rapidly throughout her body. Things changed very quickly, and despite the care, treatment, and attention surrounding her, her body could not overcome it.
We fought beside her, cared for her through the difficult days, celebrated every little bit of progress, and loved her through the very end.
Losing her has left a hole here that is hard to put into words.
But the care she received, the comfort she knew, and the love surrounding her mattered. She was never alone, and she was deeply loved.
That is what refuge is supposed to be.

For weeks, they have been known by the worst thing that happened to them. The Graveyard Four. Four little pigs abandoned in a graveyard during a funeral, sick with mange, mites, worms, and the effects of serious neglect.
Now they are healing. Their skin is improving, their personalities are coming out, and soon they will be neutered and head to the wonderful home waiting for them.
